1. Where is the Mount Pleasant animal shelter located?

The Mount Pleasant Animal Control shelter is located at 300 Enterprise Blvd.

2. Does Mount Pleasant have a "leash law"?

Yes, an animal must be within an enclosed fence or kennel and can not run loose. It is illegal to leave a dog or cat tied up (tethered) to a cord, rope, chain or other restraint. You can walk an animal on a leash. For more information please review the Mount Pleasant City Ordinance involving Animals.

3. How many dogs, cats or ferrets can I keep?

An owner or harborer may keep no more that four dogs, cats or ferrets of any combination, over the age of two months.

4. When I see an animal running loose what should I do?

Call the Mount Pleasant Animal Control office at 903-575-4174, Monday through Saturday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (excluding City holidays). If no one answers the phone during business hours then please leave a message.

If you need assistance for a dog bite, dangerous animal, or injured animal and the Animal Shelter did not answer the phone, call the Mount Pleasant Police Department at 903-575-4004. A police department operator will evaluate the call and determine if a police response is needed.

Found harbored animals can be reported to the Shelter during business hours for collection.

5. Can county residents use the animal control and protection facility?

Yes, under an agreement with Titus County, Titus County residents can bring stray or unwanted animal to the facility at no cost. The shelter will also accept animals from Mount Pleasant residents.

The city has an animal contract with the City of Pittsburg and Gilmer. Only animal control officers from those cities can deliver an animal to the shelter. The shelter does not accept animals from Winfield, Pittsburg, Gilmer or any other city or county residents.

6. How long are animals kept?

Animals are kept at least 72 hours from the time they enter the facility, excluding Sundays and holidays.

7. Are dogs or cats required to be registered or licensed by the city?

The city does not register animals, however, a current rabies vaccination is required by the time the animal is four months of age and every 12 subsequent months thereafter. In addition, the veterinarian shall issue a metal vaccination tag that must be placed around the animal's neck. the vaccination tag must be upon the animal at all times.

8. What is the cost to reclaim my pet?

The cost is $25 for the first day or any part thereof and $10 for each additional day.

9. What does it cost to adopt an animal?

After 72 hours of an animal being brought in, an animal is deemed suitable by the animal control officer and can be adopted. The city does not guarantee health or temperament of any animal. The prospective owner will be required to have the animal sterilized and vaccinated under State law. The cost ranges from $43.00 to $88.00 depending on the sex and species of the animal.

10. Where do I report a barking dog?

Contact the Mount Pleasant Animal Control office at 903-575-4174 Monday through Saturday 8:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. (excluding holidays). After hours or on holidays contact the Mount Pleasant Police Department at 903-575-4004 to report the disturbance.
