The planning department's main responsibility is to accommodate growth and development while creating and maintaining a safe and diverse community that conforms to the comprehensive plan of the city.

The Planning Department provides the following:

• Review and approval of development plans and/or site plans.
• Review of applications for variance permits and zoning requests.
• Staff support to the City Council and the Planning and Zoning Commission in matters related to zoning and development.
• Information on development standards to those who wish to develop property within the City or its extraterritorial jurisdiction.
• Information regarding current zoning and future land use plan designations for specific pieces of property.
• Maintenance of the city’s zoning map.
